Health Insurance after layoff

One of my friend (single guy) got laid off from Snap last year. His severance got over on Dec 31, 2022 and so is medical coverage provided by Snap.

Currently he doesn't have any medical coverage. Today there was a health issue and he couldn't go to urgent or emergency care due to his mental condition.

Wondering if one has to pay for health insurance premium with decent coverage, how much does it cost per month?

COBRA

He said he has COBRA, does it work like regular insurance coverage? Does he need to pay anything extra from his pocket  every month to make it work like regular coverage?

COBRA is nothing but discounted insurance plan which companies offer for some employees where you still have to pay certain amount but work like your regular insurance coverage

COBRA by definition means continuation of coverage. Employer contribution part of insurance has be borne by the employee in addition to theirs. He has to signup within 30 days of termination date. Otherwise, it wont be available. Usually health insurance is covered through the end of the month. Say for e.g. if someone is terminated on the 10th of the month, their normal insurance without any additional payments is covered until the end of that month.

At the end of employment your  HR usually shares all the details regarding COBRA..I think it's 60 days to decide.

Most cases you need to pay the employers part but that depends on the severance package

if you have preconditions definitely go with cobra

alternatively you can buy temporary insurance from market place  with qualifying event but its headache to select the right plan and there will be so many hidden exemptions

Also if you dont have insurance doctors usually have discounted plans

its not discounted though. Basically you will have same benefits as your employer provided insurance for an year. But it is sh*t expensive .. better take one of those obamacare or marketplace plans temporarily
