All religious texts were written with the practices and social situations at that time.. in this case, it was 2000 years ago.. Khuran is more than 2000 years old.. Hindu scriptures are even much older.. if we are following these books, we need to adapt them to the current society norms and practices or stop following them altogether .. we cannot literally translate and try to impose them on people.. Islam ad a whole is in trouble just for this reason.. 

women were second class citizens in this world for a long long time.. In US, women got voting rights less than 100 years ago.. they were not allowed to even work.. Middle East still has some of these practices..
