Markets can stay irrational longer than you can stay solvent.... Zoom out see the market reaction 1 or 2 years from now

Why the Stock Market Is Going Up When Worries Abound

https://www.barrons.com/articles/stock-market-rally-worries-637c7baf

The answer, counterintuitively enough, is all that bad news itself, argues Sevens Report President Tom Essaye. It is precisely “because so many people came in 2023 bearish [that] the lack of a market decline is creating a reversal of that opinion and supporting stocks.”

He points to the “pain trade,” in which the market causes the most pain for the most people: “When everyone is bearish, the pain trade is higher. As such, the pain trade has been higher for all of 2023 and that’s helping support stocks despite decidedly mixed fundamentals (and mixed is being generous).”

That dovetails with the fact that 2023 began with a bang, even as many investors were still feeling pessimistic on the heels of 2022’s drop, and fear only multiplied with the banking crisis.

However the tide may be turning, as many investors have gotten more optimistic following the market, and the economy’s, surprising resilience, implying that the pain trade may soon turn back lower.

“Bottom line, sentiment matters in the near term, and extreme bearish sentiment following the banking failures has helped this stock rally continue. However, sentiment has improved substantially,” writes Essaye. “So while we’re not yet at levels I’d consider a caution signal, we’re not very far away, either.”

That said, another possibility is that the market has remained strong because it already took its medicine, as evidenced by previous losses.

RBC Capital Markets head of U.S. Equity Strategy Lori Calvasina argues that at its October 2022 lows, the S&P 500 had already priced in a recession: At that point it had fallen some 25% from its January highs, whereas the median recessionary drop dating back to the Great Depression has been 27%. Similar contractions for the small-cap Russell 2000 over the summer of 2022 also suggested it had priced in a recession at those lows.
