Mostly, elder people can hear noise fine, but have trouble with understanding day to day speech. Find a good audiologist, he can fine tune the device based on observations and patient needs. Buy a device that can be tuned. If you want to further delve into this topic, reddit has an excellent subreddit r/HearingAids @kevinUsa 's post has good suggestions and valid point about warranty.
