Earphones wouldn't be of much help. They are for very mild problems. First make sure whether the issue is with noise or dialogue. Mostly, elder people can hear noise fine, but have trouble with understanding day to day speech. Find a good audiologist, he can fine tune the device based on observations and patient needs. Buy a device that can be tuned.
