The basic reason Costco checks is to stop multiple users using one membership. 

The reason they threatened is  " we are not sure if that's her husband card or stolen card" - I know they can verify by calling but they cant do it for every member. 

I am  for what happened I understand it might be a nightmare for your wife. 

Most of our husband and wife names have different last names and costco is abused a lot by sharing membership cards.

Retail lo 30% margin is very common, and in fact it is very less.. they lose lot of money on produce and food items and also returns..

Indulo antha shock and embarrass and exhaust avvalsina pani emundi.. they just asked her about the card and she should have just called her husband.. they are not police and she was not arrested or restrained her and restricted from making a phone call.. even when police arrest, you have a right to make phone calls.. he should have went in immediately and clarified after she came out.. 

may be he gave his card to another family and the woman is not his wife… or he is not in the parking lot when his wife was shopping.. either way, if that is her wife, he should have got her an extra membership card, which is free

that guy is probably on a power trip and being unreasonable, should have called husband and resolved the issue or even should have gone back and discussed

Not true, only the one whose name on card can use. But what is said is not believable as normally stores don't act that rude. And second normally don't cancel the card, they will ask the actual member to come and put the cart aside which happened couple of times to me.

Sharing a Costco incidence for your awareness. 

 

Me and my wife always shop in Costco together for monthly groceries. Today, we went together but my daughter was hungry so I stayed in the parking to feed her. My wife finished shopping and used self-kiosk as as always but one of the Costco guy had apparently been 'observing' her. He checked the Costco card which was in my name, not wife's. He said this is illegal, took her to the back of the shop to a room, threatened with what she did, made her wait, collected ID and made her sign a form that she is not allowed in any Costco in the country. She tried to say that my husband is here and I'll call but he said 'you don't want to involve him'. He did not give any chance to explain the situation. He took the membership card and said it's now cancelled. He didn't attempt to communicate me before cancelling my card. My wife was in shock, embarrassed and helpless. This was the only time when I wasn't physically present at the billing. I offered to go inside and resolve when my wife returned to the car but she was exhausted and my daughter got upset. So we just returned home. She is still shaken. My wife prefers to shop together and we kept postponing adding her name to the card but wasn't expecting such a punishment for just staying in the car for one time during billing. Just be aware and update your cards if required. I still don't know if I'm allowed to renew my membership but I'll fix that later, not in any rush.

 

Edit1: Thank you for your support. Most comments are puzzled about why the Costco employee didn't allow a phone call to me. We're puzzled too. At some point, I was out of the car to get water from the food court and I was right outside when all of this happened. My wife was in shock so she didn't push him for a call especially after he said 'you don't want to involve him'.

 

Edit 2:We didn't go back to shop immediately to resolve as my wife was in shock, she just wanted to go home and my toddler started crying when she saw us upset. We will go another day to resolve and they should've CCTV evidence of me being physically present if they doubt us.

Seattle area Costcos are very strict when it comes to desis I heard.. those ppl look at desis as chida porugulu! It’s bcuz our people do lot of stuff which they are not supposed to i guess!

shoplifting chesinollani kada itta chestharu? something fishy!!! I think she forgot to scan an item and vaadu choosi pakkaki teesukelluntadu. if this is only a card issue / he can simply say get your card or the member and take your things antunde.
