there is a small thing missing here bro. Russia doesn't mind Ukraine joining the EU, but it is dead against it joining NATO, as joining NATO would place arms in Ukraine and Russia doesn't have enough intercept time if something were to be launched from Ukraine.

This is Vladimir Putin saying he has no problem with them joining EU, even after the war began.

Yanukovich was brought down using the maidan revolutions to cause a regime change and all sorts of excuses would have been used for the same. EU integration is probably bandied about but probably not the main reason.
