It was a total, utter, comprehensive defeat by PLA inflicted on the Indian Army. India lost 38,000 square kilometers of land. Of course this pales into insignificance given the large number of Indian soldiers who died in this war.

Some suggest Jawaharlal Nehru's death was directly attributable to this war with China.

The massive difference between now and then is that India is a nuclear armed power which is a big equalizer. So, there is very little likelihood of a full blown conventional war between the two. There will be very limited skirmishes along the border but a full scale war may not happen in the near future.

The bottom line is that India will never be able to regain the land we lost in the 1962 war. It is a bitter but unfortunate truth.
