TX is cheap or expensive depending on where you are coming from..

In the order of affordability with 1 being the cheapest:

1. Lubbock
2. El Paso
3. San Antonio
4. Houston
5. Dallas
6. Austin

If you are planning to buy a home, the most important aspect is the total monthly cost (Not just the mortgage). 
For example, In Houston, you can still get a house in the high 200s or low 300's but the catch is the Property tax rate Flood rating, and Hazard insurance. Even if the property value is 300's you will end up with the same payment as 400 K in other areas with low insurance costs and Property taxes.
