before vali asking rama about justice of killing him from behind a tree, vali didnt know the true story and intention of Sugriva in the episode of killing that demon, he misunderstood his brother and took away sugriva wife, he snatched the kishkinda kanda kingdom and ruled it all alone, -- where is dharmam here, and when rama kills vali behind the tree, he asks where is dharmam, how adharmam of rama killing him behind a tree... 

Rama gives many reasons for his action of killing behind the tree - while its not necessary - he still gives Vali many reasons and makes him understand that he should die because of his bad karma and actions... good point is when vali dies he dies very happily in the hands of the great rama.
