Every school has a diff criteria for picking students. Extra curricular activities, . Of course good grades. Good grades does not always mean smart people. A lot of hardworking kids who may not necessarily be smart, do get good grades and go to good schools. 

I do not know Stanford, but have seen friends kids get into Berkeley for pre-med. Their hardworking kid got into Berkeley where as their extremely smart kid could only get into a normal school.

My niece got into Stanford pre med, but she's the top 1%. Spelling bee finalist, top grad from a top 1% school in VA etc so may be her profile.
