Dude, You might not know how much they earn. You might also don't know what are their financial preferences. 

Just to give an example, I have a friend who bought the same way.. 5% down for a 550K house in the Austin area.. Leases a luxury car with a $1000 payment monthly. He keeps saying I don't have money every time.. 
The thing is he is rich in India, he doesn't care about savings here nor for retirement or child's college.. 

He wants to spend it all and enjoy it... Worst case he has money in India, will migrate and spend that as well.

also you can reduce the emi by recasting it(not refinance)
