Bank of America allegedly cheated customers by opening fake accounts, overcharging on fees and withholding credit awards, according to federal regulators. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau has ordered the bank, America’s second largest, to repay more than $100 million to customers and $90 million in penalties. Another $60 million in fines has been levied by the Office of the Comptroller. The allegations recall those made against Wells Fargo, which in 2020 settled Justice Department charges that it had opened millions of bank accounts without customer permission.
