What was the biggest cultural difference, academic strategy, or skills you lacked when you first arrived?

I don't know how to operate a Texas Instruments calculator, but my matlab skills seemed ok, while my C programming knowledge was pretty basic. competent in verilog. can produce documents in Word using various fonts and templates.

Today's students, in my opinion, have awful MS Office abilities, absolutely no knowledge of programming, and can't even click an external link that has been put into a word document. Zero interest or abilty to write academically.

When I first came, I was ok with MATLAB, VHDL, and C Programming skills. I was actually good with Algorithms and Math. The current generation is a bit more laid back I guess. American classroom has a commercial aspect to them that I never noticed back home or maybe I was too young and naive, that is, they treat college as an investment. Considering the student loans and 6-8% interest gives them the motivation to be successful in at least STEM students.

One little thing that irks me is total lack of higher-math skills when they come to university. There are some exceptions, however, depending on the state and schools. The majority of the students come to the University with very basic math and science under their belt. Most of them start with  algebra and take 4 sem of maths to start major courses in Engineering. Unlike Indian students who start of with math 1, is calc-III.

Dont generalize all students

mandi ekkuvaithe majjiga paluchana ante

bad students also coming to us now

there are good talented people in every generation

even good colleges are there from 1980s in andhra and telangana but engineering colleges okkasariga 2004 ki 100 ayyayi 2014 ki 700 ayyayi

first 50 colleges are producing even better students than 20 yrs back
