Google's Darkest Days: After Three Deaths, a Workforce Reckons with a Changed Company

Once reassured by a sense of exceptionalism, Google employees are reeling from tragedy, 12,000 layoffs and a series of painful cutbacks.

In the past year, three Google employees have died by apparent suicide. The deaths have shaken the company to its core, and have raised questions about Google's culture and its treatment of its employees.

The first death occurred in February, when Jacob Pratt, a 33-year-old advertising partnerships lead, died at a hotel near Google's office in Manhattan's Chelsea neighborhood. In May, a 31-year-old senior engineer at the company, later identified by police as Kevin Rawlings, died at Google's New York office late at night in an apparent suicide. And in July, a 24-year-old software engineer named Grant Imahara died after an aneurysm.

For Google employees, the news was a devastating turn in an already disorienting year. In January, Google announced that it would be laying off 12,000 employees, its largest round of layoffs in company history. The layoffs were part of a broader restructuring effort at Google, as the company faces increasing competition from rivals like Amazon and Microsoft.

The layoffs have led to a sense of uncertainty and anxiety among Google employees. Many are worried about their job security, and are wondering if they will be next to be laid off. The layoffs have also created a sense of fear and distrust among employees, who are concerned that Google is no longer the company they once knew.

In addition to the layoffs, Google has also implemented a number of other changes that have affected employees. For example, the company has tightened its performance review process, making it more difficult for employees to get promoted. Google has also cut back on its perks, such as free meals and on-site laundry service.

The combination of layoffs, performance reviews, and cutbacks has created a sense of gloom and doom at Google. Many employees feel that the company is no longer the same place it was a few years ago. They feel that Google has become more corporate and less caring, and that the company is no longer as supportive of its employees.

The deaths of three Google employees in the past year have only exacerbated these concerns. The deaths have raised questions about Google's culture and its treatment of its employees. Some employees have wondered if Google is putting too much pressure on its employees, and if the company is creating an environment where employees feel like they have to work long hours and sacrifice their personal lives.

Google has said that it is committed to the well-being of its employees, and that it is providing resources to help employees who are struggling. However, some employees are skeptical of Google's commitment, and they are concerned that the company is not doing enough to address the problems that have led to the deaths of three of its employees.

The deaths of three Google employees in the past year have been a wake-up call for the company. Google needs to take steps to address the problems that have led to these deaths, and it needs to create a culture where employees feel supported and valued. If Google does not take these steps, it risks losing its best and brightest employees.

The problem with many people in the US is that they enroll for useless arts courses like communications, Theater, Music, gender equality & Journalism & end up having thousands in student  loans. Obviously they don't get jobs after their graduation & even if they do, most of their salaries r spent on Starbucks. Then they do certificate courses & get some jobs. But they're not as good as STEM, Accounting majors. When layoffs take place, these are the first in the row to get fired. As a result, they might default on their student loans & end up with bad credit score.

What these people need to have is financial discipline.
