XFINITY FLEX account using xFi Gateway router/modem. He is charging more now for modem also. No other provider option available.

Did anyone used own modem instead of paying the rent?

buy a separate modem and router. Avoid modem+router combo if you need good coverage

Arris for modem and net gear for router

Never used their router/modem. I have my own. There are many Modem+router 2in1 devices. Arris makes some good ones.

Extreme Pro/Gigabit plan will increase from 900 Mbps to true 1 Gbps speed. Using for office work also along with youtube movies/news, so not sure this much needed.

Go for DOCSIS 3.1

Actually 300 MBPS speeds are enough for all your needs. I work remote, internet TV, youtube, multiple devices, etc. Never had issues.

Great, thanks. I appreciate your quick reply. Do we need to inform Comcast about our modem details or just plug and use and return their modem?

Installing your own modem is very easy esp when you have their app. Previously you had to call them to register your device. But now the app does that.

You don't need to inform them about your own router. However, they will keep charging until you return.

Anyways its always a better idea to call them and let them know to avoid any surprises.

I was in your same situation early this year as promotion was over on XFi gateway modem.

I bought Netgear nighthawk modem+router(both in one device) for $350 I guess from Costco. I'm happy with it.

Registering new modem through app doesn’t work sometimes. Call them and they’ll do it. If you live in a house with a basement get a router with antennas for good coverage.  Also, return your flex and xfinity gateway and keep the ups receipt until you see it’s taken off your account.
comcast is pretty bad in this and will sometimes keep charging you even after returning their device.
