"Vegetarians Only" Posters At IIT Bombay Canteen Walls Spark Row

Mumbai:

Students have raised the issue of food discrimination at the Indian Institute of Technology-Bombay (IIT-B) after “vegetarians only” posters were put up on the walls of a canteen in one of the hostels, a student representative said on Sunday.

Posters stating “vegetarians only are allowed to sit here” were put up on the walls of the canteen of hostel 12 at the prestigious institution last week, and a photograph of the same went viral on social media.

An official from the institute claimed that while they had found out about the posters, they did not know who had put them up in the canteen.

There are no fixed seats for people consuming different categories of food and the institute is unaware about who put up the posters, he said.

Representatives of the student collective Ambedkar Periyar Phule Study Circle (APPSC) condemned the incident and tore the posters.

“Though RTIs and emails to the hostel's general secretary revealed that there is no policy for food segregation at the institute, some individuals have taken it upon themselves to designate certain mess areas as ‘vegetarians only' and force other students to leave that area,” the AAPSC said.

Following the incident, the hostel's general secretary sent an email to all students saying, “There is a counter for Jain distribution in the hostels mess, but there is no designated sitting space for those who consume Jain food.” There have been reports of individuals forcefully designating certain areas of the mess as “Jain sitting space” and not allowing individuals who bring non-vegetarian food to sit in those areas, the general secretary wrote.

“Such behaviour is unacceptable and no student has the right to remove another student from any area of the mess on the grounds that it is reserved for a particular community. If any such incident is repeated, we will be forced to take strict action against those involved,” he stated in the email.

Example of veggie narsi @Tryad  being "thoughtful about his food"

When you don't complain on people demanding "Halal" or "Kosher" in compliance with their religious beliefs, you shouldn't also complain people wanting to have vegetarian food being cooked in different utensils from the non vegetarian food. There are also other religious minorities such as Jains who pratice strict vegetarianism. Imposing majoritarian "Non-Veg" mindset on minorities is undemocratic & infringing on the rights of minorities.

If you cook pork in the same utensils as other "halal" meat, the reaction would be the most violent one.

Don't impose Non Vegetarian majoritarian mindset on people with vegetarian food habits. The same is true for the opposite.

There's nothing wrong in asking for "Vegetaria safe spaces" to practice people's religious & food beliefs. Just like you don't take your well done pork steak into "Halal" safespaces just to respect people's religious beliefs. These people don't dare to take their Non-Veg Non-halal majoritarian mindset to the people practicing "Halal food practices" because they know about the reaction.

That's why this thing was posted in the first place. When confronted with facts, these people don't have answers.

little bit conflicted about this veggie imposition in India, since a lot of veggie lifestyle is directly tied to caste and purity. A lot of aspiring caste leaders are extremely hostile to even the suggestion of animals having rights - as noticed in the idiotic Jallikattu protests.

prominent thought influencers from the dalit castes (like director Pa.Ranjith) openly celebrating eating of beef as some radical act against caste hegemony. Lots of dishonest actors in the anti-caste movement who make easy debunkable claims that vegan lifestyle is for the elite, when meat is insanely expensive compared to most readily available and cheap plant sources of protein, that can further be made next to free with govt intervention.

dalit activists yapping about their right to eat meat are in fact harming dalits and other people who can't get access to meat and suffer malnutrition, just because they love to eat meat and selfish fcuks for the most part.

Played a huge part in my giving up on India, since I don't want to seem like I'm encouraging veggie hegemony at the cost of human dignity for the people who've been traditionally policed culturally.

but in the west I'm perfectly okay with having meat free zones. Have definitely dabbled with the ethics of banning bringing meat to work, and serving only vegan food in canteens.

I don't have a problem with smell of meat since I'm already consuming cultured meat. I just make sure it doesn't come directly from butchering of an animal.

the agreement to have separate stoves for veg and non-veg is bizarre, and shows deep seated casteism in IIT Bombay.

what do they think of cultured meat? Its a bit sad that India's highest technical education institution is full of dumbfcuks who are still stuck in the 19th century.

Its like ethics doesn't even matter to them.. Just some random notions of purity their idiotic ancestors left them behind.

what 'facts'? it is casteist to expect different stoves for veg and meat.
