Especially the movies made in the last decade are simply templates of early 2000s, same rotta format stuck especially the senior heros, when was the last time you were super thrilled for a movie or after waiting watching one?

Balayaa - son - father -double action- faction back drop

Chiru - impersonation of  Chiru from 1990s, stuck with rotta villan and a bawarse batch as his followers, okka rendu remix veena steps

Pavan - Kushi was his last movie rest all are either copies of his prior work or copied from other languages - elevations and chapri actions

Mahesh Babu - edo message undali types(you cannot differentiate one from the other)

NTR - He is someone who did a decent job when compared to his earlier stint and rotta movies.

Allu Arjun - He also was a decent entertainer, but same templated rotta

Ram Charan - veedu single expression tho lagukuntu vachestunnadu

Prabhas - stuck in bahaubali fevor and want to make everything in that scale but all the attempts have ended deeply disappointing.

IMO the only saving grace has been some small movies and OTT otherwise the senior actors have been hugely disappointing

malayalam lo maatrame awesome movies teesthunnaru.. and may be Hindi lo konni. marathi antunnaru, but nenu choodale.

worth checking 10malayalam movies to find one great one. Telugu lo 1000 sample chesina dorakavu max oka 10 decent movies untaai.. not a single path breaking movie.

focus more on box office earnings. andukey rajamouli laantollu are considered as good directors in telugu.

Agree Malayalam has some great movies. Especially I started watching only during the covid but story telling takes precedence than any actor.

I saw one movie last year called Minnal Murali , it puts even Hollywood super hero movie makers to shame on how to make a super hero movie that emotionally connects to the audiences.

its not about story taking precedence over actors.. Telugu films lo kooda konni unnai alaantivi.. kancherapalem, palasa, maa oori polimera etc..

but Malayalam movies can come up with a kind of brilliance that seems impossible to witness in any other languages.. adhi malayalam ani cheppa kudadhu anuko.. because its mostly from one guy - Lijo Jose. All his movies are great.

I'm too old to appreciate mediocre movies - including movies that put story above actors, without having much to say in the way of a story. Lijo Jose movies are about critiquing malayali society in a way that is rare to see in mallu movies. Most of their movies are super smug and irritatting to watch for me, even if the story is good.

Minnal Murali is okay, saved by the villain's acting. mostly.

focus on the story itself is not enough. The story needs to have enough scope to be interesting beyond being cliche... For that you need enough interesting characters to populate the story, and enough good actors to play those parts.

recent malayalam movie Thankam, a sort of thriller cum travelogue has such characters by the dozen.. you meet interesting people one after the other, culminating in a somewhat lame climax spoiled by listless acting by that tamil guy, plus some whiny writing.

Telugu writers are not able to write amazing characters like that. They can only seem to imagine high achieving sociopaths like Arjun Reddy.. never a simple thief who can run circles around an investigative officer with his impeccable english, and wit.

I doubt writers (including new writers like the overrated Tarun Bhaskar) even step outside their bubbles to give original stories. So the effort to put story above actors is a futile one, since the story itself is not worth it in the first place, and is full of cliches that we have already come across a 1000 times in our cultural spaces.

I think telugu movies are consigned to mediocrity until its writers come from diverse spaces.. Not just the upper/middle class.

the greatest telugu movie to me will always be Falaknuma Das, which is a remake of Lijo Jose's Angamaly Diaries. that's how great movies are written. Not like Arjun Reddy.

Another thing I don't understand in Telugu movies, that try to have pan-Indian appeal is lack of representation of diversity of India.

everybody is speaking telugu, and if they speak a different language may be they exist to be made fun of.

malayalam movies incorporate tamil, kannada sometimes seamlessly into their movies. sometimes for racist reasons, but I'm not talking about such kind of films.

why can't telugu films have kannada, marathi speaking characters etc. Its hard enough to find urdu speaking ones actually, so may be I'm dreaming too big.

beyond making money, telugu films have not evolved. includes both small and big budget movies.

an example of a well read movie writer/director in Telugu is Trivikram.

says a lot about the standard of reading that is considered as great. that guy sucks beyond writing silly aphorisms.

everytime someone praises him, I cry for Telugu.

Too much cynicism about Telugu movies.

Movies are made by producers to make money. It's a business. History of Telugu film industry is full of magnificence that Malayalam Industry can't even dream about it. Telugu audience patronized all genre of movies. Kerala is a commie state and hence the movies are agenda driven.  People expecting to see "slice of life" movies are nothing but snobs. Movies from 1970-80 were exactly that. People got sick of that and Chiru changed the landscape from 1980-1990 all this while still doing great movies. Slice of life movies sponsored by government are good for getting awards. They indulged in show casing "poverty porn" It became so bad in Malayalam that people over there started patronizing soft porn movies!!! Thankfully Telugu film industry never got to that state and in fact made soft porn actresses as comedians.

Movies are for escapism. Lots of people groveling through their daily struggles want some relief. If rich people want some soul satisfaction they can read philosophy. There is plenty of it for them. I would watch Pokiri one more time than a Malayalam movie whose director says couples might get divorced after watching his movie. They simply propagate Hindu hatred and misandry all the while masquerading as some kind of come of age movies.  Allu Arjun's Happy broke open the doors for them.

Arjun Reddy is a classic. It explored the ugly and vile nature of human behavior.  Usually one of them is redeemable because of the circumstances. Here both the lead actors were not. I think modern audience are brainwashed by upper class woke puke snob reviewers. A man should approach a Woman in certain way or else it is "misogynistic" . This led to modern movies being superficial where all the male lead actors act feminine. Women are shown as angel who doesn't fart. There is a "surprise" birthday scene with balloons which audience can see it a mile away then there is going on dates scene and then there is a "proposal" scene. All fake, boring but pretending to be modern. Example Hit2. The amount of woke dialogues is cringy and preachy. All upper class elitist pretenders. One more famous trope is Woman is a police officer who had to deal with a Women hating male superior.

End of the day most movies fail. There is no exception. The amount of garbage Hollywood spewed out the last two decades is unbelievable. All the fast and furious nonsense, same old super hero garbage and the usual tropes of feminism.

I agree about Trivikram and Rajamouli being overrated. Trivikram's cringe commentary in some of the scenes are pathetic. Rajamouli and his fascination with "Braveheart" continues.

In the last two decades most films of all the lead actors in the Telugu Film Industry failed. With OTT, TFI will find a level what is that level is yet to be seen. Thankfully it is less "woke" compared to Hollywood and Bollywood.

I don't have self hate about TFI. I like movies like Pokiri, Pushpa and KGF(Kannada) and I am proud of it. I can enjoy Arjun Reddy, Ee Nagaraaniki Emayyandi, Pelli choopulu, Mental Madilo, Geeta Govindam, Brochevaarevura, O Pitta katha etc. In the last decade lead actors might have been stuck with rot but there have been fantastic small budget movies.

Cheers.

okay Arjun Reddy is a decent movie. I didn't watch it, but I agree I'm being overly critical about it. and all the other movies you mention are decent too.

but there's no Churuli level movie in Telugu. there are some decent movies that one can watch. Nothing will blow your mind like Churuli will. Atleast for me. I don't expect Telugu to make great movies.
