A new COVID variant is spreading, and it's stirring fears that major restrictions could be put back in place.

Knewz.com has learned that the EG.5 coronavirus variant is causing a moderate rise in cases and deaths in places like the United Kingdom and the United States.

According to the Washington Post, EG.5 is a subvariant and descendant of omicron, which has remained the most prevalent strain of COVID in the world.

Infowars.com — owned and run by conspiracy theorist Alex Jones — is claiming that the rise in the EG.5 variant will lead to major COVID lockdowns in mid-September.

Citing anonymous sources, Infowars.com reports that a meeting took place last week in which TSA managers were told of new memorandums policies that were to be implemented as early as mid-September that would include masking for TSA and airport employees.

The outlet reports that this week TSA team members will receive new guidelines on how the restrictions will evolve. Infowars reports that by mid-October pilots, flight staff, passengers and airport patrons will be required to wear masks.

ccording to the outlet, TSA managers were told that it was not a matter of "if" but "when" COVID number would rise, and the Biden Administration would roll out major COVID restrictions.

Despite the Infowars.com report, government officials have not indicated a major rise in COVID cases — and deaths — are on the horizon.

“At this time, there is no evidence indicating EG.5 is able to spread more easily, and currently available treatments and vaccines are expected to continue to be effective against this variant,” Kathleen Conley, a CDC spokeswoman, said in an email to the Washington Post.

The WHO has noted that the EG.5 variant poses a low risk to public health in comparison to other omicron descendants.

The World Health Organization declared on May 5 that COVID-19 is no longer a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC).

The WHO has stated that the symptoms of the EG.5 variant are similar to those of previous omicron variants and are not more severe.

According to Techarp.com, Pfizer, Moderna and Novavax are set to roll out new COVID-19 vaccines in late September.
