India's best young player is from Hyderabad - Arjun Erigaisi.. He unfortunately lost to Pragg in the quarterfinals. Traditionally even Andhra had and still has strong players like Pendalya Harikrishna, Koneru Humpy etc.

Chennai has more players now because of some very active clubs in Chennai, plus the influence of Vishwanathan Anand, who mentors these kids now and then. Many players from outside Chennai like Nihal Sarin - my fav Indian young player currently also trained extensively in Chennai.

There's not much money in Chess. modern competitive chess is almost like rote learning maths for kids.. Kids that spend a lot of time learning 100s of openings, couple dozen gambits, and practice endgames extensively have a straight forward advantage at the lower level.

its likely that Chennai produces such loner kids who can spend a lot of time on Chess. Other than that, there's no special reason. Plus the success of Anand, and consequently success of kids like Pragg, Gukesh means that many kids in Chennai want to take up the sport. I think Indian top 10 has atleast 5 kids from Chennai.. top 100 lo kooda around 30-40 untaru sure ga..

Its not that hard to be good at chess. like all sports, it needs a lot of training and patience. To be great, you have to completely dedicate your life to it, for very less returns in the form of compensation. perhaps Chennai kids are okay to live a life of misery, compared to kids from elsewhere.

monna oka ethnocentric yedhava adigaadu ga why Telugus come to US ani.. same reason anna. Its cultural.

you see one person successfully do it, plenty of them follow. Plus there's some structure to Chess academies in Chennai, with Anand taking active role in mentoring a lot of kids.

I would never advise a kid to take up competitive Chess. Its a waste of your time and life.

rather play chess as a hobby and study the game in free time, if one wishes.

why would you play a game that a computer has already mastered purely through bruteforce? ofcourse I'd give the same advice to any kid trying his hand at sports. All sports are a waste of time to play professionally. Chess more so, since even the top greatest ever player Magnus Carlsen would not be worth more than a fraction of mediocre players in other sports.

its much better to spend time evaluating and breaking down chess, and every other sport and try to irritate top players by creating bots that can easily beat them.. In Chess it has already happened.. It'll happen in Tennis within this decade.
