ok, assuming you don't have kids. After having kids it will be harder to take care of dog. I know two families gave up their dog after having kids.

Another family have to leave their dog here everytime they go to India for a long trip. And whenever you have trips it becomes a hassle to take your dog with you.

I am sure you know you have to take it to walks no matter if its cold, snowy, stormy, hot, windy etc... apartment mentioned so it will be tight space for all of you.

dogs ki rogalu vastayi, er vuntayi, super specialist vuntaru ani telisina vallu penchukunte telisindi.  it is a hassle if you decide to travel to india or some long trip. they are fun but also a lot of responsibility.

My kids and I love dogs and cats equally. Dogs are loyal and the love they give is so pure and genuine. On the other side Cats are bossy and funny and live in their own world. For a long time we debated who we love most.

In the meanwhile kids best friend family who live in same street as us bought Golden Retriever. They keep their house clean but it smells a lot. I asked them if they had a choice, would they get it again. Their response is yes and no. Yes for it being a part of family and no for all the work involved. Its like having an additional child in family. They stopped going for walks. Mornings and evenings occupied with dog parks. They went to india and kept a housekeeper at home to look after dog which cost them close to $3000 per 4 weeks. They tried dog care centers but looks like their dog was not adjusting so they denied. So practically a lot of work. Be ready for all this.

Like @Sanjiv mentioned, I would look at a cat. Easy maintenance. Even when u go on vacation they just need food and they roam around outside. Someone needs to re-fill thier food every 2-3 days.

We found a couple of stray cats in community and feed them. We are happy and they are happy. Me and kids came to a conclusion we love Cats more.

Thanks @Konebhar6 ...helpful feedback...I will think about it...

If your wife really likes the dog so much, you have to compete with the dog for your wife’s time and affection…

May be that's @SaradaChinnodu plan. He does not want wife's focus so that he can concentrate on extra curricular activities.

great advice bro....I need make up my mind I guess for all that...

it just sounds like you are speaking of from your experiencE? do you own a dog/cat?

I have both. Cats are easy to care for and they rule the internet. they are always curious, get into everything and follow us wherever we go which makes them interesting. If you are in the kitchen, they are in the kitchen - if you are in the closet, they are in the closet climbing boxes - if you are in the bathroom, they wait outside patiently until you come out...

if you are a frequent traveler, dogs are not meant for you as they are very dependent even to walk them outside. I also looked into adopting a monkey but for all their human-like intelligence, they still need a diaper and we need to wipe them and clean them whereas even a baby kitten can take care of herself 100% licking/grooming her body all day and night, licking her butt and keeping herself squeaky clean - cats are the CLEANEST animals on Earth - they don't need a bath (a cat's stomach is immune to bacteria in their urine and poop). So even when a monkey is 40 year old, you would be wiping a 40-year old man's butt! Monkeys are very social animals, need someone around 24/7 and it is illegal to own them in some states.

as far as intelligence goes, the dog falls somewhere between the cat and the monkey. cats are terribly untrainable but they are still VERY CUTE and hours of fun while monkeys can do so many feats without any training. I wonder how cats make half-a-dozen babies, carry them from place to place with just their mouth scavenging for food (no hands, no fingers and no voice) and raise them on the streets while we super smart humans with hands, fingers, voice to talk and a brain to think and all the privileged comforts like housing, supplies, transportation, support - see the stars to conceive and raise just one baby.

just remember - unlike dogs, cats are KINGS and QUEENS and we are their slaves! Treat them Royally. A domestic cat shares 95.6% DNA from a Tiger and the cat is technically just a wild animal living in our house! you can drag a cat to its food but you cannot make her eat! she will eat when she wants to, at her terms. They are very wise, serious and no-BS. Period.

a cat picks one person in the family as its companion - the one who spends more time with her and cares for her. they are meat eaters and it is criminal to feed them vegetarian. if you are vegan or cannot stand the sight/smell of meat items, well...

It would be the best decision ever. You will be more active and you will smile a lot more than before. Sacrifices you make would be an hr of your time everyday and lose travel flexibility, other than this everything else is manageable I think. First time dog owner/parent here.
