latest observations of the planet also hint that a very special molecule, called dimethyl sulfide, could be present on K2-18b.

On Earth, dimethyl sulfide “is only produced by life,” according to NASA. “The bulk of the DMS in Earth’s atmosphere is emitted from phytoplankton in marine environments.”

Closely orbiting the cool dwarf star K2-18, the exoplanet lies within the star’s habitable, or Goldilocks, zone and is 8.6 times as massive as Earth. An analysis of Webb’s observations found the planet has abundant methane and carbon dioxide in its atmosphere.

The presence of these carbon-bearing molecules, along with a scarcity of ammonia, could indicate an atmosphere rich with hydrogen that surrounds an ocean world, according to a NASA news release.

More from GPT4...

K2-18 is a red dwarf star located about 124 light-years away from Earth in the constellation of Leo. As of my last training cut-off in September 2021, K2-18 was of particular interest because of its exoplanet, K2-18b.

Here are some key points about K2-18b:

  1. Discovery: K2-18b was discovered using the Kepler Space Telescope's second mission, known as K2, in 2015.

  2. Super-Earth: It is classified as a Super-Earth because its size is larger than Earth's but significantly smaller than the gas giants in our solar system like Uranus and Neptune.

  3. Habitable Zone: K2-18b orbits within its star's habitable zone, which is the range of distances where conditions might be just right for liquid water to exist on a planet's surface.

  4. Water Vapor: A significant breakthrough came when researchers detected water vapor in the planet's atmosphere using data from the Hubble Space Telescope. This was the first time that water vapor had been detected on an exoplanet in the habitable zone of its host star. This does not necessarily mean the planet has liquid water or life, but it makes the planet an interesting target for future studies.

  5. Potential for Study: With the advent of more powerful telescopes, like the James Webb Space Telescope, K2-18b and its atmosphere will likely be studied in more detail to determine its potential for habitability and to understand the composition of its atmosphere more clearly.

Remember, while the discovery of water vapor and the planet's location in the habitable zone are intriguing, it doesn't confirm the presence of life or even liquid water on the surface. Many more factors are involved in determining a planet's habitability, including its internal structure, magnetic field, atmospheric composition, and more.
