Tamil movies are not free of this type of pandering too.. they romanticize lower class, and impute all sorts of virtues for people who live on the edge of society. Tamil movies are like Shekhar Kammula type movies that revolve around lower class characters, none of whom are actually interesting.

I can't think of an authentic expression of lower class characters in Tamil films.. Goli Soda came close, but was too massy and convenient - 4 slum kids taking on a big dada.

Couple movies come to my mind. Visaranai and Mirugam. Telugu directors I watched growing up don’t have guts to make such movies in fear of not getting more chances.

Asuran kuda hit me hard

agree...devakatta is good writer...and sukumar is also good writer..(rangastalam)...but he is in the commercial circle now and cant show his true potential..

similarly nag aswin...he surprised me with his film evade subramanyam...but he is also going in commercial path...

and vivek atreya...he is still good with his two movies like brocheyvarevaru raa, and recent naani film..*cant rememebr the name..)

and venkatesh maha too...his is still good with his two movies..but didnt get any offers after that...

I loved Uma maheswara ugrarupasya. But I think its a remake from malayalam. c/o kancherlapalem is good.

Loved Nag ashwin's movies so far.

Off topic .. there is this movie called "Second Hand". Comedy baguntundi .. satirical comedy ... Will post link if I find it. watch it if u find it.

Adedo telugu-tamil dubbed movie chusa TV lo. It hit me really hard. Basically a topper guy who studies literature even though he is a topper in school. Everyone makes fun of him. Ppl think he chose literature (teaching side) coz he is bad at studies. He joins as school teacher. No one gives him respect. His classmates who are not good at studies buy seats in engg college and get good jobs in software and make a lot of money. This guy's passion is teaching and its tough to find a rental home in city as everything has gone up because of software guys.

Its very close to reality. Rents, home prices and everything has gone up because of software guys/NRIs but ppl with other jobs such as school teachers (of course their salaries are revised now), accountants, etc cannot live in these cities.

Katradhu Thamizh is the name of that movie. that movie is a perfect example of how overboard Tamil directors go in the name of 'portraying reality'. The movie is way too shocking, and makes silly pronouncements on economic liberalization.

I can understand someone becoming a psycho because of how the society pushes him to an edge.. but the director sorta sympathizes with the psycho with unwarranted commentary on s/w jobs etc, and not exploring the character of the psycho itself. the director at that time probably didn't understand wtf he was making. That was his debut movie.

He then another movie on people in the s/w industry itself, but this time he was much more measured in his criticism of them. Its a way better film that Katradhu Thamizh. The movie is Taramani.

both these movies have fantastic music though.

Thanks for the name of the movie. I kinda liked it though. Felt realistic at that time as s/w salaries were way too high compared to other professions. Its not the same case now though.

but high s/w salaries was never the problem. its always good if a bunch of people get high salaries.

the issue in India at that time was discrimination. certain set of people could not get into these jobs. that has changed now, for the most part.

watch Taramani from the same director.. a way better movie.. the guy who plays Rajini's son in Jailer is the hero. Its his first film, and he was fantastic in it.

the movie literally has no structure and just plods on and on, just documenting the lives of its protoganist's both of whom are horrible horrible people
