on the contrary, they feed very, very lousy/bad and less/same food everyday (ask Martha Stewart) that prisoners feel sick to the stomach, vomit and get frustrated so much that they desperately want to get out of prison just to eat some average or even below average food (even if it gone bad). Food becomes more important than the freedom and privacy that are non-existent in prisons. As a result, inmates fight over food like dogs, steal, hit, hurt others and become food-aggressive quickly. Most of them fight over a chance to work in the kitchen so they could eat some/enough food (just as we see a lot of blacks working in fast food restaurants just to eat food).

they also trade food items purchased from commissary (using the money sent by their relatives, if they are lucky) for huge favors from others - like the smallest pack of chips in exchange for a few meals from other prisoners. working as a laborer in prisons earns just a few cents an hour which is not at all worth it but that is all they can earn while in prison and not everyone gets a chance to work for money. all prisoners are required to cook, clean, mop, wash clothes, wash bathrooms, wash restrooms, wash toilets and do a ton of other tasks all for free. poverty is so bad in prisons that they steal even flip-flops/slippers, socks and under-wears belonging to others.
