On October 14, 2023, millions of people in North, Central and South America will have a chance to witness a spectacular celestial phenomenon: a "ring of fire" solar eclipse. This rare event occurs when the Moon passes in front of the Sun, but is too far away from Earth to cover it completely, leaving a thin ring of sunlight around the dark lunar disk. Here are some facts and tips on how to enjoy this amazing sight.

Where and when can you see it?

The "ring of fire" solar eclipse will be visible from a narrow path that stretches from Oregon to Texas in the United States, and then crosses Mexico, Belize, Honduras, Panama and Colombia before ending in Brazil. The eclipse will begin in the US at 9:13am PT (12:13pm ET) and end at 12:03pm CT (1:03pm ET). The maximum duration of annularity will be 4 minutes and 28 seconds in Texas.
