India at Asian Games 2023, Day 13: Men’s hockey team bring gold; kabaddi, cricket teams in final as 100 medals assured at Hangzhou

India had yet another historic day on Friday at the Asian Games 2023. With 95 medals won - 22 gold, 34 silver and 39 bronze - and seven more assured, India’s tally at Hangzhou will cross the three-figure mark.

 

The Indian men’s hockey team clinched their fourth Asian Games title, beating Japan 5-1 in the final. Harmanpreet Singh and Co. also secured a spot at the Paris 2024 Olympics.

 

Recurve archers won their first Asian Games medals in 13 years. The men’s team fetched silver while the women’s team took home the bronze.

 

The Indian men’s cricket team beat Bangladesh in the semi-finals, assuring a medal on their Asian Games debut.

 

India also made the men’s and women’s kabaddi finals at Hangzhou. The men’s team defeated Pakistan and the women’s team beat Nepal in the semi-finals.

 

HS Prannoy won a badminton men’s singles bronze. Satwiksairaj Rankireddy-Chirag Shetty, meanwhile, beat world No. 5 pair Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik of Malaysia in the semi-final en route to the men’s doubles gold medal match.

 

The women’s regu won bronze, India’s second-ever in sepaktakraw and first in a women’s event at the Asian Games.

 

India also won the silver medal in the men’s bridge team event, upgrading from the bronze finish at the 2018 Asian Games. India also remained in the silver medal spots in the men’s and women’s chess team events, with only one round to go.

 

Wrestler Bajrang Punia, however, failed to defend his Asian Games title at Hangzhou. Sonam Malik, Kiran Bishnoi and Aman Sehrawat, on the other hand, clinched bronze, making it five wrestling medals at the continental meet.

India won 3.5-0.5 against the Republic of Korea in the men's team event. Harikrishna Pentala was held to a draw while Gukesh Dommanraju, Arjun Erijaisi and Rameshbabu Praggnanandhaa won their games.

 

Harika Dronavalli, Vaishali Rameshbabu, Vantika Agrawal and Savitha Shri Baskar won their games as the Indian women's chess team secured 4.0 points against Hong Kong China.

 

Hockey: Indian men's team win gold medal, secure 2024 Olympics spot

The Indian men's hockey team won 5-1 against Japan in the gold medal match at the Asian Games 2023. India have now won four titles at the continental meet - 1966, 1998,2014 and 2023. The 2018 Asian Games gold medallists Japan, meanwhile, settled for the silver medal.

 

Harmanpreet Singh and Co. found it difficult to penetrate into the Japanese final third in the first quarter. However, Manpreet Singh (25') gave India the lead in the second quarter as India had a 1-0 lead at half time.

 

Indian captain Harmanpreet Singh (32') and Amit Rohidas (36'), then, scored from penalty corners in the third quarter, while Abhishek (48') further added to the score sheet. Japan, however, struck a goal back through a penalty corner Seren Tanaka (51'). But the Indian team ensured that there was no late comeback for the Japanese side.

 

Harmanpreet Singh (59') scored again from a penalty corner, ensuring a commanding win for India in the men's gold medal match.

 

The Indian men's hockey team also secured a Paris 2024 Olympics quota, granted to them as Asian Games 2023 champions. The Craig Fulton-coached team also finished the 19th Asian Games campaign with a perfect record.

 

 

Wrestling: Bajrang Punia loses bronze medal bout

Tokyo 2020 bronze medallist Bajrang Punia failed to win a medal at the Asian Games 2023. The 29-year-old Indian grappler lost 10-0 to former world junior champion Kaiki Yamaguchi of Japan in the bronze medal match. Bajrang Punia lost 1-8 versus former world champion grappler Rahman Amouzad in the semi-final earlier today.

 

Bajrang Punia was the men's freestyle 68kg champion at the 2018 Asian Games. He had also bagged a silver medal in the 61kg category in the 2014 edition.

Bridge: Indian men's team bag silver

India lost all six men's team final sessions versus Hong Kong China at the Asian Games 2023 and settled for a silver medal. Hong Kong China scored 229.1 points in the final, compared to India's 152 points. It is India's 94th medal of this continental meet.

 

Jaggy Shivdasani, Sandeep Thakral, Rajeshwar Tiwari, Sumit Mukherjee, Raju Tolani and Ajay Khare featured for the silver medal-winning men's bridge team at Hangzhou. Japan and China, meanwhile, won the bronze medal at the event.

 

Bridge was introduced to the Asian Games in 2018. The Indian men's pair had won gold while the men's and mixed teams picked up bronze. While the Indian men's bridge team upgraded to silver at the 19th Asian Games, the mixed and women's teams were ousted in the preliminary rounds.

 

Wrestling: Kiran Bishnoi, Aman Sehrawat clinch bronze  

Kiran Bishnoi, a Commonwealth Games bronze medallist, won the women's freestyle 76kg bronze medal, following the 6-3 win against Mongolia's Ariunjargal Ganbat at the Asian Games 2023. Earlier, Kiran beat Japan's Nodoka Yamamoto before going down against Zhamila Bakbergenova in the semi-final.

 

Later, India's Aman Sehrawat beat China's Liu Minghu 11-0, a victory by technical superiority, in the men's freestyle 57kg bronze medal match at the Asian Games 2023. The 20-year-old Indian wrestler also won the Asian Wrestling Championships gold medal in April. It is India's 93rd medal at the 19th Asian Games, taking the wrestling tally to five bronze at Hangzhou.

 

India on course for 100 Asian Games medals: Here's how

Sonam Malik won India's 91st medal, a wrestling bronze, at the Asian Games 2023. India, on Wednesday, had already surpassed their previous medal tally record - 70 at the 2018 Asian Games.

 

India, meanwhile, will also go past the 100-medal mark at Hangzhou. The Indian contingent are further assured nine medals, adding to the 91 already won.

Soft tennis: Jay Meena, Raga Sri Kulandaivelu Manogarbabu make quarters

Indian soft tennis players Jay Meena, in men's singles, and Raga Sri Kulandaivelu Manogarbabu, in women's singles, advanced to the quarter-finals of the Asian Games 2023. 

 

Jay Meena won 4-1 against Indonesia's Mario Harley Alibasa, followed by a 4-2 victory against Chen Yu Hsun of Chinese Taipei in the men's singles Group A. Raga Sri Kulandaivelu Manogarbabu, meanwhile, beat Cambodia's Mengchoung Ki 4-1 and Nguyen Thi Mai Huong 4-0 in her women's singles Group F matches. 

 

Aniket Chirag Patel, on the other hand, won one of his two men's singles matches. Aadhya Tiwari lost both her women's singles matches. The soft tennis singles quarters will begin tomorrow.

 

Wrestling: Sonam Malik wins bronze

Indian grappler Sonam Malik beat China's Long Jia in the women's freestyle 62kg bout, winning the bronze medal at the Asian Games 2023. The 21-year-old Sonam Malik is also a former U20 World Championships silver medallist. Sonam won against Nepal's Sushila Chand and Mongolia's Noeurn Soeurn before losing versus Mun Hyongyong in the semi-final at Hangzhou.

 

It is India's third wrestling medal, all bronze, at the 19th Asian Games, following Sunil Kumar and Antim Panghal. Bajrang Punia, Aman Sehrawat and Kiran can add three more to the tally as they will also feature in bronze medal bouts today.

 

Archery: Men's recurve team bag silver

India lost 5-1 against the Republic of Korea in the men's recurve team final, settling for the silver medal at the Asian Games 2023. It is India's 90th medal at Hangzhou, further extending the record medal tally this edition. The Korean team, meanwhile, won their ninth men's recurve team title, a first in 13 years.

 

The Republic of Korea archers scored a perfect 60 in the first set, putting India straightaway on the backfoot. Atanu Das and Co, however, shared the points in the second set. The third set, too, was a closely contested affair until the final arrow, wherein the Republic of Korea triumphed by scoring a 10.

 

India has now won two recurve medals at the 19th Asian Games - the men's recurve team silver and the women's recurve team bronze.

Equestrian: Yash Nensee eliminated in individual jumping

India's Yash Nensee, mounted on horse D A Mour Du Wenuphar, was eliminated in the equestrian individual jumping competition 2 at the Asian Games 2023. The 22-year-old Yash Nensee was the only Indian in the individual event. India were also eliminated from the team event on Wednesday.

 

Saudi Arabia's Abdullah Al-Sharbatly won the equestrian individual jumping gold medal. Meanwhile, UAE secured silver and bronze with Omar Aljneibi and Abdulla Almarri, respectively.

 

Sepaktakraw: Indian women's regu win historic bronze

The Indian women's regu team, led by Maipak Devi Ayekpam, lost 0-2 versus Thailand in the semi-final at the Asian Games 2023. India, however, bagged the bronze medal, India's first-ever in women's sepaktakraw. It is also the second medal won by an Indian sepaktakraw team in Asian Games history.

 

In the group stage, India had lost to Vietnam but won against China. A women's regu sepaktakraw medal at the 19th Asian Games was assured earlier today after Vietnam beat China, who finished at the bottom of the Group A standings.

 

Kabaddi: India beat Pakistan in men's semis, assured medal

The Indian men's kabaddi team won 61-14 against Pakistan in the semi-final at the Asian Games 2023. After an early set of points for Pakistan, Indian raiders and defenders relentlessly piled on the points in the first half. The Indian points surge on the mat continued in the second, securing their biggest victory at Hangzhou to make the gold medal match. Pakistan, on the other hand, settled for bronze.

 

India inflicted three all-outs, each, in the first and second halves of the men's kabaddi semi-final. Naveen Kumar and Pawan Sehrawat led the raiding contingent in the first half while Sachin Tanwar kept up the momentum in the second.

 

India, meanwhile, will take the mat in both men's and women's gold medal matches tomorrow. The men's team will be in action at 12:30 PM IST while the women's team will lead the charge at 7:00 AM IST.

 

Archery: Men's recurve team advance to gold medal match

The Indian men's recurve team won 5-3 in the semi-final against Bangladesh, securing a finals date against the Republic of Korea, eight-time Asian Games champions at Hangzhou 2023. India took a 4-0 lead after two sets, however, Bangladesh won the third. In the final set, the points were shared 57-57, taking the Indian team into the final. The Indian archery trio are assured at least a silver medal at the Asian Games 2023.

 

Earlier, Atanu Das and Co. won 5-4 against Mongolia in the quarter-final. India won the first and third sets while Mongolia won the second and fourth, taking the match into a shoot-off. Indian archers shot 10, 9 and 9 in the shoot-off, outscoring Mongolia's scores of 9, 9 and 7.

Sport climbing: Indians ousted in boulder and lead men's semis

Indian climbers Bharath Stephen Pereira Kamath and Aman Verma finished ninth and tenth, respectively, in the men's boulder and lead semi-final, failing to make the Asian Games 2023 final. Both Indian climbers scored 59.9 points in the boulder and lead events.

 

Two climbers, each, from Japan, the Republic of Korea and China secured the finals berth while Indonesia and Hong Kong China will also see one climber, each, in the final.

 

Meanwhile, India will feature in the women's boulder and lead semi-finals tomorrow, starting at 6:30 AM IST.

 

Badminton: HS Prannoy bags singles bronze

India's HS Prannoy, ranked seventh in the badminton rankings, lost to world No. 8 Li Shifeng of China 16-21, 9-21 in the men's singles semi-final at the Asian Games 2023.

 

A world championships bronze medallist, HS Prannoy added the Asian Games bronze to his tally, India's second-ever men's singles medal in the continental meet. The 31-year-old Prannoy also featured in the silver medal-winning men's team at Hangzhou.

 

Syed Modi had bagged India's previous men's singles badminton medal, also a bronze, at the 1982 Asian Games.

 

Canoe slalom: Vishal Kewat, Shikha Chouhan falter in finals

Indian canoer Vishal Kewat clocked 191.12 seconds, including a 56-second penalty, in the men's canoe slalom final, finishing seventh at the Asian Games 2023. The 20-year-old Vishal Kewat was 10th in the semi-final but made the final as he was the highest-ranked Indian canoer.

 

Shikha Chouhan, meanwhile, ranked sixth in the women's kayak slalom final with a time of 227.24 seconds at the 19th Asian Games.

 

Kabaddi: India vs Pakistan men's semis on agenda

The Indian men’s kabaddi team will take on Pakistan in the semi-finals at the Asian Games 2023. Both teams have won medals in each continental meet, a trend that continued in Hangzhou. While India have won seven golds and one bronze, Pakistan have two silvers and six bronze.

 

India, meanwhile, have won in all six previous Asian Games men's kabaddi matches against Pakistan. At the Asian Games 2023, India topped Group A by winning all four group matches. Pakistan, on the other hand, were Group B runners up with three wins in four.

 

The IND vs PAK men's kabaddi semi-final match will start at 12:30 PM IST today. Live streaming of the semi-final will be available on Sony LIV with telecast on the Sony Sports Network TV channels.

Wrestling: Bajrang Punia, Aman Sehrawat to fight for bronze

Tokyo 2020 Olympic bronze medallist Bajrang Punia beat Bahrain's Alibeg Saigidgusein Alibegov 4-0 in the men's freestyle 65kg quarter-final, securing his spot in the semi-final. However, the 2018 Asian Games champion failed to defend his title, losing 1-8 against former world champion grappler Rahman Amouzad in the last four today.

 

The 29-year-old Bajrang Punia, however, will contest for his first Asian Games bronze medal today, with the bouts starting at 2:30 PM IST.

 

Aman Sehrawat, Sonam Malik and Kiran will also wrestle in their respective bronze medal bouts after losing the semi-finals.

 

Aman Sehrawat lost 12-10 against Japanese wrestler Toshihiro Hasegawa, a World Championship bronze medallist, in the men's freestyle 57kg semi-finals today.

 

Earlier, Aman Sehrawat made a stunning comeback in the quarter-final to beat IR Iran's Ebrahim Khari. The 20-year-old Aman was trailing 1-8 at the end of the first period. However, he won 18 consecutive points in the second round, winning the bout 19-8.

 

Sonam Malik, who sealed back-to-back 10-0 wins earlier today, lost 0-7 to Mun Hyongyong of the Democratic Republic of Korea in the semi-final. Kiran, meanwhile, also lost her semi-final bout against Kazakhstan's Zhamila Bakbergenova 4-2, following her 3-0 win in the quarter-final.

 

Radhika, on the other hand, lost 5-10 to Mongolian grappler Delgermaa Enkhsaikhan, an Asian Championship silver medallist, in the women's freestyle 68kg quarter-final, ending her Hangzhou campaign.

 

Sepaktakraw: Indian women's regu through to semis, assured medal

India confirmed its second-ever sepaktakraw medal, a first for the women's team, in Asian Games history. The Indian women's regu beat China in the group match on Thursday. Following Vietnam's win over China earlier today, India made the women's regu sepaktakraw semi-final at the Asian Games 2023.

 

The Indian women's regu will go up against defending champions Thailand today at 1:00 PM IST. Vietnam face the Republic of Korea in the other semi-final, which will begin at the same time.

 

Volleyball: Women's team beat Mongolia, to play ninth place match

The Indian women's volleyball team won 75-53, clinching all three sets, against Mongolia in the 9th-12th place classification match at the Asian Games 2023. India will go up against Hong Kong China tomorrow for a ninth-placed finish at 8:00 AM IST.

 

India had finished third in Pool A women's volleyball at the 19th Asian Games but beat Nepal 101-91 in the classification Pool G encounter.

 

Cricket: India beat Bangladesh to storm into final

The Indian men's cricket team beat Bangladesh by nine wickets in the semi-final, securing a berth in the final and assuring a medal at the Asian Games 2023.

 

India's Ruturaj Gaikwad and Tilak Varma made light work of the 97-run chase while scoring over 10 runs per over. Gaikwad scored 40 runs off 26 balls and Varma smashed a 26-ball 55 after Yashasvi Jaiswal was dismissed in the first over.

 

Earlier, R Sai Kishore headlined with three wickets as the Indian spinners restricted Bangladesh to 96/9 after 20 overs. Seamer Arshdeep Singh also kept a lid on the scoring.

 

Pakistan take on Afghanistan is the other men's cricket semi-final today at the Asian Games 2023. India will take on the winners from Pakistan vs Afghanistan in the men's cricket gold medal match tomorrow at 11:30 AM IST. The Indian women's cricket team had won the gold medal at Hangzhou.

Archery: Women's recurve team bag bronze medal

The Indian women's recurve archery team won the bronze medal match 6-2 against Vietnam at Hangzhou. India won the first, third and fourth sets to clinch the nation's first recurve archery medal at the 19th Asian Games.

 

Earlier, India lost 6-2 against the Republic of Korea, who have won the last six titles, in the semi-final at the Asian Games 2023. With scores of 56 and 57, the Koreans took a 4-0 lead after two sets. While India won the third by two points, they weren't able to score 10s in the fourth and conceded the match to the Republic of Korea.

 

India's Atanu Das, Dhiraj Bommadevara and Tushar Shelke will take aim in the men's recurve archery team quarter-final at 11:50 AM IST today.

 

 

Wrestling: Bajrang Punia wins pre-quarters, Sonam Malik advances to semis

Indian grappler Bajrang Punia, the men's 65kg defending champion, sealed a 10-0 victory by points in the pre-quarterfinal against the Philippines Ronil Tubog at Hangzhou.

 

Sonam Malik won 10-0 against Nepal's Sushila Chand in the pre-quarterfinal, followed by another 10-0 win versus Cambodia's Noeurn Soeurn in the quarter-final, making the women's freestyle 62kg semi-final at the Asian Games 2023.

 

The 21-year-old Sonam Malik, a silver medallist at the 2022 World Junior Wrestling Championships, will take the mat for her semi-final bout later today.

 

Meanwhile, the 2023 Asian Wrestling Championships gold medallist Aman Sehrawat beat the Republic of Korea's Sunggwon Kim 6-1 on points in the men's freestyle 57kg pre-quarterfinal. He will take on IR Iran's Ebrahim Khari in the quarter-final today.

 

In the women's freestyle 76kg category, Kiran won 3-0 in her quarter-final bout against Japan's Nodoka Yamamoto, advancing to the semi-final at the Asian Games 2023.

 

Ju-jitsu: Four Indians ousted in eliminators

India's Rohini Kalam and Anupama Swain in the women's -52kg, along with Angitha Shyju and Nikita Choudhary in the women's -57kg categories were ousted in their opening ju-jitsu bouts at the Asian Games 2023.

 

Rohini Kalam lost 50-0 to UAE's Asma Alhosani while Anupama Swain went down 12-0 against China's Miao Jie in their round of 16 matches.

 

The women's -57kg round of 32 match saw Angitha Shyju crash out 50-0 to the Republic of Korea jujitsuka Gaeun Geum. Meanwhile, Mongolia's Udval Tsogkhuu won 50-0 in the round of 16 against Nikita Choudhary.

 

Uma Maheshwar Reddy and Amarjeet Singh in the men's -85kg and Kiran Kumari in the women's -63kg will be the last Indian jujitsukas in action at Hangzhou, starting tomorrow at 6:30 AM IST.

 

Cricket: Indian spinners star, Bangladesh restricted to 96

The Indian men's cricket team kept a lid on the Bangladesh scoring, with the spinners dominant at Hangzhou. Bangladesh, who were put in to bat first scored 96/9 after 20 overs in the IND vs BAN men's cricket semi-final at the Asian Games 2023.

 

India's R Sai Kishore led the charts with three wickets, Washington Sundar scalped two while Tilak Varma, Shahbaz Ahmed and Ravi Bishnoi also bagged one.

 

Only three Bangladeshi batters, Parvez Hossain Emon, Jaker Ali and Rakibul Hasan, notched double-figure scores. Bangladesh registered only two fours and four sixes in the semi-final.

 

India's openers Yashasvi Jaiswal and captain Ruturaj Gaikwad will step on the field to chase a target of 97 for a spot in the gold medal match.

 

Kabaddi: Indian women's team seal semis win

The Indian women's kabaddi team won 61-17 against Nepal in the semi-final against Nepal at the Asian Games 2023. The Ritu Negi-led India, who had a 29-10 lead at half time, showcased their all-round capabilities in the second half to storm into the women's kabaddi final at Hangzhou.

 

Indian raiders scored nine bonus points while the defenders inflicted five all-outs. India will take on either the Islamic Republic of Iran or Chinese Taipei in the women's kabaddi gold medal match tomorrow at 7:00 AM IST.

 

 

Canoe slalom: Vishal Kewat, Shikha Chouhan through to final

Vishal Kewat clocked 134.15 seconds in the men's canoe semi-final and advanced to the final, despite an additional 56 seconds penalty. On Thursday, the 20-year-old Vishal Kewat faltered in the first heats, however, made it to the semi-final via the second heats.

 

The men's canoe final, featuring the Indian canoer, is scheduled at 11:30 AM IST today.

 

Meanwhile, Shikha Chouhan finished sixth in the women's kayak semi-final, sealing a spot in the final at the Asian Games 2023. The women's kayak final race will start at 12:01 PM IST today.

 

Sepaktakraw: Indian men's regu lose to Myanmar in group game

The Indian men's regu lost 21-15, 21-13 against Myanmar in the Group B match at Hangzhou 2023. India had suffered defeats in their previous two matches, too, on Thursday, versus Thailand and the Philippines.

 

With three defeats in three matches, India failed to make the men's regu semi-final and ended their 19th Asian Games campaign.

Cricket: R Sai Kishore, Washington Sundar strike early

India's R Sai Kishore, playing his second T20 International, scalped the Bangladeshi opener Mahmudul Hasan Joy in the fifth over. Washington Sundar, in the next over, took the wickets of the Bangladesh captain Saif Hassan and Zakir Hasan.

 

The Indian men's cricket team bowlers kept the Bangladesh scoring under control in the powerplay. Bangladesh are 21/3 after six overs in the IND vs BAN men's cricket semi-final at the Asian Games 2023.

 

 

Archery: Women's recurve team make semis

The Indian women's recurve archery team, featuring Ankita Bhakat, Bhajan Kaur and Simranjeet Kaur, beat Japan 6-2 in the quarter-final at the Asian Games 2023. India won the first two sets 53-49 and 56-54 but Japan bounced back to take the third. The Indian team held their nerve, then, in the fourth to advance into the semi-final.

The Indian men's cricket team captain Ruturaj Gaikwad won the toss and elected to bowl first against Bangladesh in the semi-final at the Asian Games 2023.

Three-time gold medallists India play reigning champions Japan in the men’s hockey final. While the gold medal is on offer, the winner will also secure a Paris 2024 Olympics quota.

 

Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty, ranked third in the badminton rankings, face world No. 5 pair Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik of Malaysia in the men’s doubles semi-final. HS Prannoy, meanwhile, takes on China’s Li Shi Feng, a Youth Olympic champion, in the semi-final on Friday.

 

Two-time Asian Games medallist Bajrang Punia will wrestle for gold today while grapplers Aman Sehrawat, Sonam Malik, Radhika and Kiran will also feature.

 

India’s chess teams, starting the day in a silver medal spot, will play in the penultimate round on Friday. The final three sessions of the India vs Hong Kong China men’s bridge final are also on the agenda.

 

Archers can also add to India’s medal tally with the men’s and women’s recurve teams in action. Indian athletes in equestrian, canoe slalom, ju-jitsu and sport climbing medal events will also be in focus.
