Are you planning for your kid to be a doctor or engineer from elementary? That's too much I guess. You can wait at least until kid gets to high school.

Engineering - Good GPA and SAT scores are must. Lot of kids take AP courses in high-school to prepare themselves better for college. It helps with GPA too. Clubs, volunteering, STEM path related courses in high school.

Medicine - in school level, it is same as engineering. Focus on GPA, SAT. Get into a good feeder school (university). Maintain 4 GPA in undergraduate level with pre-med courses. Score high in MCAT. Gain some volunteering experience in medical field.

Isn't the question supposed to be how as a parent I can enable my kid to be successful and happy rather than doctor/engineer?

Our generation is different. Only few professions had job opportunities. If money is measuring yard stick, in US even blue collar jobs make same money as engineers. Lawyers, Accountants, management roles, science PhDs.. full of opportunities. Not sure why to force what we think is right on them

He might just be collecting information at this point. My kid just got into High School and man its so confusing. I also in collecting information mode talking to friends whose kids graduated. I don't know why they made high school course selection so complex.

If your kid is selected for gifted, let them do it. But do not force a kid to study hard to get into Gifted category. Probably shows up well on College applications. That's all.

Please don't take me wrong. I know as parent you are trying to do what is best for your kid.

But if a parent choosing courses for high school kid, I think is first step towards taking away their independent thinking. That is inculcating dependent mind set and forcing them to lookout for someone to guide them at every step. They get enough guidance from school counselor if they seek for it. I feel high-school level onwards parents role is observe from sidelines, assure kids that they are there for them and course-correct when needed but not handhold them throughout the journey.

End of the day, It is your kid. Your style of parenting.

I get what you are saying. We never pick subjects for kids. High school is very confusing for both kids and Parents esp 9th grade. The whole system.

We ask kids to check with counselors first. Not all kids are same. Sometimes when they ask we help. Atleast I gather all the information I could so that if my kids need me, I can help.

For e.g. Kids gets into peer pressure and sometimes want to take subjects beyond their capability. Its a tough situation for parents. You don't want to discourage them and at the same time it might be too much for them. So I let my kids take the courses they want. I ask them to put in enough effort and do not worry about results. When they ask for tutor help (in case teachers not good) we do provide.

Kani information gather cheyadam lo tappu ledu kadaa.
