It will be crowded, now a days many hooligans. Decent people are staying in Ft. Lauderdale area. If you just looking for beach experience stay in Ft. Lauderdale. Plan a trip to lion country safari. 
plan 1 day to Miami including bay front park, near by boat trips

Beach front hotels in Ft Lauderdale, Deerfield beach area may be better choice with kids. You can go for day trip to Key West, Naples and Miami from there.  People taking cruise trips from Miami generally cover these places before heading to Orlando area.

It is going to be crowded and expensive hotel rooms at this time though.
