Canada Embassy Issues Student Visas In Record Time

Ahmedabad: When diplomatic ties between India and Canada soured in October this year, students from Gujarat bound for January intake weren’t expecting an expedited visa process. Immigration and study counselling consultants had opined that the batch could face issues if the standoff continued, and if Canada discontinued outsourcing immigration process in India.

However, fears of students and their parents have been proven wrong as the Canadian embassy has issued student visas in record quick time for the January intake, with most receiving their visas within a fortnight of application. Dhruvi Patel, who is going to Toronto for post-graduation in strategy management, said that she received her visa within nine days of application. “My fears were proven wrong. I got the visa just three days after submitting biometric data,” said Patel, who will be leaving for Toronto on December 27.

Similarly, Mittany Gohil who had applied for visa on November 1 was astonished to receive it on November 19. “I am going to Lethbridge College in Alberta to pursue graduate studies,” Gohil said.

Ahmedabad resident Nisarg Patel, who will be flying to Canada for an advanced diploma course at Sheridan College, told TOI that his visa was processed within a week. “I had applied on November 1. The approval letter came on November 8 and the visa on November 15,” said Nisarg, who wants to experience Canada’s education system and is positive about "better chances of permanent residency there compared to other countries".

The story is similar for Himanshi Trivedi who applied on November 6, and had the visa in her hand on November 12. “With Indo-Canada diplomatic ties in a tangle, I never expected things to happen so quickly. Himanshi Trivedi will be studying BSc in fisheries, wildlife, and conservation sciences at British Columbia University.

Shloka Joshi, who got admission for a master’s in cyber security course at Toronto’s York University said, “Many of my friends who had got admissions in Canadian universities did not pay the fees fearing their visa applications may be rejected. However, my family and I took the risk as I was adamant to study in Canada,” said Shloka who received an approval for her application on November 9, four days after making the application. Her passport received the visa stamp ten days later.

Visa consultant Bhavin Thakar said the Canadian embassy has issued visas in record time for the January intake. “It normally takes over a month, but this time students have got their visas in six to 15 days of application.” Thakar added that this has helped them book flight tickets at better rates.
